Psychological Type Descriptions: ESTP
Description:
ESTPs are an active, engaging, pragmatic, and resourceful group. Accounting for between 10 and 13% of the population, they tend to be highly sociable promoters. Whether selling, negotiating, or leading, ESTPs tend to be able to quickly figure out what makes their audience tick and then use this knowledge to help sway the audience to their side. A particular talent of the ESTP is lightening up tense situations through humor and distraction. Relatively disinterested in the day to day details of planning and follow-up, ESTPs thrive on emergencies and unexpected problems. ESTPs tend to quickly notice the relevant facts in a situation and then show a strong ability in formulating efficient solutions. Drawn to the center of the action and loving the good things in life, ESTPs are usually among the first to find the best new restaurants, the most intriguing new plays, and the most exhaustive new places to shop. Finally, ESTPs tend to value logical and objective data in their decision-making.
Potential Blindspots:
As with any type, ESTPs can encounter problems in certain areas. For instance, ESTPs show such a strong gift for handling emergencies that they often do not learn to plan ways of avoiding emergencies or to persevere in completing tedious projects. This tendency can leave the ESTP taking on too many tasks without leaving time to finish all of any project. To outsiders, the life of an ESTP can be fraught with unnecessary drama and chaos-leaving those close to the ESTP tired and shell-shocked. ESTPs are also sometimes perceived as crude or insensitive in their humor, and can alienate others through their strongly outgoing personalities. Finally, ESTPs can sometimes become so fixated on staying current in their possessions that they become materialistic.
