Psychological Type Descriptions: ISTJ
Description:
The one word that most completely describes the ISTJ is "dependable". ISTJs pride themselves on their steady, constant, and thorough style. One title given to ISTJs is "inspector"-shown by their keen sense of right and wrong, and their devotion to duty. ISTJs are unwilling to try new approaches without first having them proven useful. Once ISTJs have accepted a way of doing things; however, they will carry it out with unwavering commitment. When given a task and a deadline, an ISTJ will competently complete the task in the allowed time if it is at all possible. In terms of their interpersonal style, ISTJs tend to be concrete and factual in their speech and are sometimes seen as blunt. They are often "no nonsense" people who shun fanciness in speech, dress, or place. ISTJs hold themselves and others to very high standards. Roughly 6-10% of the population share the ISTJ type.
Potential Blindspots:
As with any type, ISTJs can encounter problems in certain areas. In the interpersonal realm, ISTJs may neglect social niceties that other types find instinctive such as giving praise and getting to know people before getting down to business. Another potential interpersonal problem stems from ISTJs holding others to the inflexible standards they hold for themselves. In typical blunt fashion, ISTJs may not successfully hide their impatience with others who they see as not pulling their weight. They may also become rigid in their ways of doing things and drag their feet when presented with genuinely useful innovations. In rapidly changing work environments, ISTJs may feel tremendous stress and even anger about the lack of standard procedures. Finally, ISTJs are often unaware that they can be viewed as lacking enthusiasm and as somewhat cold.
